hi all,
We are scheduled for our final class tomorrow, but, I am expecting little to no attendance,
so in order to make the best use of our time I propose the following:
—I will be at school around 4pm ( by mediascapes studio / next to maclab) Will stay at school for about 3 hrs after that (in a review)
If any of you would like to meet then please let me know, so we don't waste each other's time, sound good? you can also call / txt me at 310 948 1766 if you have other suggestions.
++++++DUE+++++:
a cd with all your work burnt into it.
You can hand this to me tomorrow or leave it in my mailbox. I need this for your grades, will not assign them without it. And, those of you who did not do your installation need to include documentation of it on the cd, you're not off the hook on that one.
thank you & best of luck in finals

presentation tomorrow
Hi, Carolina,
Some of us will present our installation tomorrow,
Mandana, Flora, Hsuanchen and me, maybe also someone else.
Due to the availability of the space, we will use the gallery in turn.
As there will be some setting up and testing that can only happen in the real place,
I guess it will be several short presentations distributed in several hours, maybe from early afternoon into the evening, the exact time is not very sure currently.
So I wondering what's your schedule for tomorrow?

Question About my FINAL WINDOWS and Frames for my studio class
I would like to talk to you about my studio final , I've been working on it for a while now , it utilizes window frames and projections mapped in top of them. Imagine a projection only in the window- I need to figure out the content and its very very difficult because it needs to transition discreetly. When can we talk about it? maybe wednesday after class?>
thanks for the help

looks dense, but its just very specific.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
dear all,
first off, I have some time this monday to meet with you discuss final installations, want to make sure all is taken care of before final a& check the work.
If you'd like to meet i propose a time slot from 1-3pm / if this doesn't work and you can meet at a different time, let me know
we can figure something out.
++++++we will meet in our regular class time for finals next week (please be on time)++++++
but I am leaving the week open for installations, reason being: we need to share projectors and define locations for those of you who have not done so already.
shao: you place is taken (as stated) please look for another option.
below is the info I gathered after class last week and what needs to happen: THIS IS CRUCIAL INFO / PLEASE ACT UPON IT.
RESERVING LOCATION WITH FACILITIES MANAGER:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
— your part: reserve location / time & duration of your proposed installation.
— you can find the reservation sheet by russ villesca's office (facilities manager)
russ_villescas@sciarc.edu
—get in touch with him for any questions you may have. It is important you take care of this. he mentioned addressing him first, and then he'd get you in touch with Gabriel (engineer) for additional assistance. He also proposed help building platforms (rigs) for projectors, which is great.
—based on your location selection please assess the following (after an on site test of your project, which is CRUCIAL):
— do you need extension cables to reach OUTLETS?
—if so, we'd need masking tape to avoid people tripping
— do you need speakers?
— do you need a laptop? and projector adaptor?
—do you need lights turned off at your location? if so, for how long and where?
PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ASAP SO WE CAN CO-ORDINATE WTH RAZA & RUSS.
RESERVING PROJECTORS (cables, laptops, speakers)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
—I spoke with Raza at AV. Attached is the list of available times that I set aside for you.
—Please select a time and let me know. We need to share this info so we know who does what when, and for how long (duration of installation)
INSTALLATION ITSELF:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
— date / time / duration
duration involves:
—set up date and time (when you will pick up projectors, build rigs, set them up etc)
— exhibition time (how long the installation will run for
— tear down time (when you plan to dismantle)
— organize this information precisely and let me, russ & raza know so that we're all on the same page and plan accordingly.
i am attaching a plan of the school with the locations we discussed last class. / made some markings myself.
please verify and make changes & reservations as required. this is very important and needs to be done as soon as possible.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
here's the list of projector needs per person as it stands now:
—liz: one projector. do you have a laptop to use / hook up to / cables etc? (same question for all)
—hsuan: 1 projector
—shao: 1 projector
—sebastian: off-site installation. will review in class wednesday
—thitawan: 2 projectors (also verufy laptop, speakers, cables, rig etc)

and one of my dearest thoughts
Our bodies are given life from the midst of nothingness. Existing where there is nothing is the meaning of the phrase, "form is emptiness." That all things are provided for by nothingness is the meaning of the phrase, "Emptiness is form." One should not think that these are two separate things.

For next Class: DUE
Hello all,
Below is what's due for next class. I want to see work.
Thank you
c
IDEA / CLAIM:
— prepare a two paragraph statement that delineates the question you are setting forth and how you will investigate it through a visual,
formal and immersive system (your claim, your argument, your system (i.e narrative sequence, media and spatial properties) and proposed execution.
FORMAL EXECUTIONS: system of thought & its behaviour
— We will review your idea alongside formal studies that bring that idea to life. You should be able to present your idea to us and back it up with work.
All components must be addressed: use of media, use of space and temporality (location, duration etc) The project mapping as a whole.
—video and sound studies: in actual form. I want to see variations on execution (rough cuts of all components) : camera angles, colour usage, timing, lighting etc
—installation / space: bring in models, renderings (if you are building a structure) or photographs that document your site if site-specific.
—Do studies on site or on model: for instance: project your video on your 'space' and see how it behaves, address questions and potential problems now.
— bring in: storyboards / any other media that informs your piece
— CONCEPTUAL PARAMETERS:
—your past assignments as reference point / point of departure.
—focus / incorporate notions of negation, disappearance, documentary, process, situation as they apply to subjectivity, language, temporality and space.
—articulate and prioritize these parameters at will, however they must create a visual, spatial and auditory system that gives form to your idea & proposed execution.
— Use this assignment to expand upon your current practice and interests. (but not as filler)
INSTALLATION OPTIONS:
— create / build a structure for an installation that uses video & sound as an inherent components.
—re-approriate an existing location and create a site-specific intervention

hello all
so I can stay in the loop please post your work / presentation ideas from this week here (for your last assignment: video installation) i'd like to get a sense of what you have in mind (a text describing your idea, rough cuts, structural sketches , site specific documentation will do)
for next class please bring in executed comps for ONE idea (the best of the 2 you presented this week). Bring any material that supports / informs your idea including a refinement on elements above: rough cuts, site-specific documentation and / or installation structure comps.
the most important thing is to create immersive spatial temporalities that move us.
thank you

For next week
hi all,
below is what's due for next class:
present 2 initial directions for final assignment:
— 2 ideas for video sound and installation / structure & behaviour / seen holistically, as an immersive system
— based on your research and past assignments, expand upon the significance of the 3 words we began with, this time focusing on notions of negation, disappearance, documentary, process, situation as they apply to subjectivity, language, temporality and space.
— You can articulate or prioritize the above parameters as you see fit, as long as they contribute to a strong argument for your ideas & proposed execution.
— Use this assignment to expand upon your current practice and interests.
installation options:
— create / build a structure for an installation that uses video & sound as an inherent components.
—re-approriate an existing location and create a site-specific intervention
'stupidity' reading (Avital Ronell) will be discussed in class, a one page paper is due
have a great weekend
thank you

Thank you
Dear all,
Thank you for your work today, I was pleasantly surprised! Let's keep at it and make something resonant, intelligent and moving for our last project, I look forward to your ideas & work. Use this assignment to explore your current practice, the more it in-forms your work the more relevant.
I will post what's due for next week soon, Aaron will take over while I am away, he can review past assignments as well, he's very savvy so this might be a great opportunity to get additional feedback.
han, we didn't have time to speak at length about your project, I very much look forward to your thoughts and a due discussion. I have time on friday if you'd like to meet (same for anyone who'd like to discuss) I'll be at school around 2pm.
have a great evening
carolina

- question and project brief:

side note: it's a busy week at school, understood, but work still needs to be done for this course, please plan accordingly.
REVISED SCHEDULE
as discussed last class, here is our updated schedule:
—i decided to take assignment 3 off the list and incorporate its parameters (documentation / process / situation) onto assignment 4 (your final piece)
this gives you more time to work on what is in process now and refine past iterations, I am looking for cohesive, beautiful work.
—assignment 2 is due week 9
—week 10: (wed, november 11) I am away in tokyo for a week, lets do a make-up class before i leave friday of week 9 (nov, 6th)
— you will have a substitute instructor for week 10, aaron bocanegra
below is a sample video form one of my students at art center, he made a sculpture, burned it down and did this piece as 'reconstruction'
using a strobe light to affect his visibility.
for assignment 2:
- question and project brief:
- shot outline / shot list: structure of piece delineated by shot sequence, rhythm, pace, intonation: i.e. how does it unfold in time-space, how does tsructure inform your narrative, how you plan to execute it (serves as a map to gather thoughts and shots)
-COMPLETE ROUGH CUT, all shots included & sound
for assignment 1:
- bring modifications to review if you're refining (which i recommend for some projects)
"stupidity" readings:
- let's leave this for next week, I want you to focus on your video work for our next meeting.
"zizek" readings:
- write a one page paper on it, discussing these possible themes (pick one)
- ontic / ontology
- self-withdrawal
- materialism of imagination
side note: it's a busy week at school, understood, but work still needs to be done for this course, please plan accordingly.

Tomorrow & next week: what's due
hello all,
quick note: i can't meet tomorrow but I am happy to stay later next week (wednesday) or set up a time friday next week (oct 23rd)
for next wednesday (oct 21st) please bring in the following, as discussed last class:
- assignment 2:
- a question that addresses what your piece inquires upon, in relation to self / other / fiction / subjectivity (use your words as aesthetic / conceptual paradigms)
- ideas (rough shots) that examine your above mentioned question
- and a short text that delineates or expands upon the question.
- use assignment 1 as a point of departure, reflect upon it, as all pieces relate to one an-other.
ask yourself: what did i want to communicate in an 'autobiography'? what is my position/ relation to a dialogue about the self and how did i communicate that in assignment 1? how can that be improved? how does that position now integrate the 'other' / fiction etc
I am happy to review assignment 1 again to continue refining, so bring these in as well
(but manage your time, as this piece should not replace our discussion for assignment 2)
- the zizek readings: please mark points of interest for discussion
- we will do individual crits
questions welcome
i will post some sample work here in the next days that may serve as inspiration / exploration
thank you
have a lovely evening

A must see , Humanities and Art unite to give you goosebumps
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIWWnbGJPFs
Next wednesday: 11am++please see below for time & what's due+++
great to see you use this space to disseminate ideas and references, thank you!
next wednesday:
– I have a court date wednesday morning at 8:30am, hopefully i will be done around 10:30 but i cannot know for sure. let's meet at 11am next wednesday october 14th.
if for some reason i cannot make it i would like to notify one of you who can in turn let others know, can someone please volunteer a phone number i can contact if need be? mine is on the syllabus
_ DUE next wednesday:
- sound readings & discussion / work sample reviews (video artists etc)
- initial ideas / sketches / for assignment 2 :fiction / subjectivity (what is 'real' what is 'fiction' are they really separate? or do they generate each other?)
- individual reviews: I'd like to get a closer look at your interests and needs for this class, we can allocate time for individual meetings in order to discuss this, sound good?
hopefully we'll have time for all, otherwise I am open to furthering our talks here (blog) or via email
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
as an overall comment i'd like to address our course narrative to clarify or open up and questions you may have; simply put our course travels this line:
- autobiographical / essay piece:
generating your POV, voice and sense of being in relation to the world (where you stand in-relation to 'reality' and the self / written & visual work, cinecriture as agnes varda would put it)
- fiction / subjectivity:
expanding on your POV, questioning line between what is perceived as 'true' vs. 'fiction,' role imagination plays in building subjectivity, i.e. individual sense of 'reality' in movement vs. the 'official' static version of what is perceived as real (often leading to lack of imagination!) Zizek reading "the night of the world," will be handed out
- process / situation:
the movement in which you traverse space and time through media and subjectivity. (where subjectivity takes-place, ever fleeting, ever-displaced). prepare for installation,
video becomes corpo-real, in situ.
negation / immersion:
the installation itself. here is where we question boundaries, subjectivity, being with-in and with-out in relation to space, materiality, location and temporality
each assignment builds upon the other, becoming more complex. the first assignment was an introduction to where you stand now, moving forward i will expect more and more refined work, let's work together to make this happen.
also: let's continue to work on assignment one till its done proper, this being said, time management is on your side, i am happy to help however possible.
see you then

For Flora: The Tower of Babel
Flora,
This might be helpful for you to look at for your project. Note how the mise en abime you are exploring (screen within screen / utterance within utterance, in difference) echoes the form of the tower itself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Babel
excerpt: "God, seeing what the people were doing, came down and confused their languages and scattered the people throughout the earth." (I am not religious believe it or not)
—thought: consider using language as utterances (spoken fragments, phonemes / in complement or replacement for the closed captioning...

Karlheinz Stockhausen / Sound ++ pls see post below for what's due next week++
Dear all,
I am posting a thread for Karlheinz Stockhausen. Some refer to him as the father of electronic music, definitely a brilliant eccentric.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karlheinz_Stockhausen
Below is a link to one of his works "Gesang der Junglinge" (song of the youths)
http://www.medienkunstnetz.de/works/gesang-der-juenglinge/
Take a listen with some good headphones. Some of you expressed interest in sound, so here we go!
NB: this is a great site that can serve as reference for the materials discussed in our class, dig in, you will likely find something of interest & inspiration.

Also, below is a paper i wrote about this piece a couple of years ago, comments welcome.

a look into "Gesang der Jünglinge"
by carolina trigo
What struck me the first time I heard "Gesang der Jünglinge" was its spatial circularity. Sounds rotate from one ear to the other, as if the listener itself were being rotated as an object. Each ear in rotation and displacement suggesting a passageway to different dimensions; wherein sounds form and dissolve as ever-changing sculptures, sequential yet non-linear.
The piece is based on a a biblical story from "The Book of Daniel," where Nebuchadnezzar throws 3 young men into a furnace who miraculously survive and begin singing praises to God. Looking into the structure of this story it mentions some aspects which I think parallel Stockhausen's approach: It states that language emphasizes structure, that structure (of theme or meaning) has precedence over chronology and that grouping emphasizes prophecies. Stockhausen intended to create the sound of phonemes electronically by matching voice resonances and pitch. The piece consists of 3 main components 1) recorded voice of boy soprano 2) electronically generated sine tones 3) electronically generated pulses.... Through Serialism, Stockhausen utilized sets to describe musical elements, allowing for their manipulation.
"Gesang der Jünglinge" explores space, colours, tones and distances. There is union and slippage. Much like a choreographer, Stockhausen materializes music by using the audience as phenomes, as bouncing boards for new reverberations to a whole. He invites us to touch the music and re-define it. We are therefore instruments, particles contributing and altering the mass and surface of the sound invading and leaving our bodies.
The piece is a superimposition of the electronic and the corporeal; the synthesized and the sculptural, a continuous discontinuity of sounds and emotions, the transformation of sound into a new language... a language akin to the performance and experience of a numinous dream, a collage of memory laments and sensations, pointing towards the known and unknown in us.
I believe "Gesang der Jünglinge" is the sound of oratory, a piece of prayer, holding some parallels to C.G.Jung's "Answer to Job" which in brief, is a study of divine darkness, of god and man as vice-versa; of the symbolic role that theological concepts or forms play in a person's psychic life. In this vein, it is not surprising that Stockhausen created or believed in his own religion (being reborn in Sirius.) I allude to "Answer to job" because I see in Stockhausen a man at the threshold of the heretic boundary between human life and divine creation. These quotes from the book might illustrate what i sense: "... but in all omniscience there existed from all eternity a knowledge of the human nature of God or of the divine nature of man." [...] "God's Incarnation in Christ requires continuation and completion because Christ, owing to his virgin birth and his sinlessness, was not an empirical human being at all. As stated in the first chapter of St.John, he represented a light which, though it shone in the darkness, was not comprehended by the darkness. He remained outside and above mankind. Job, on the other hand, was an ordinary human being, and therefore the wrong done to him, and through him to mankind, can, according to divine justice, only be repaired by an incarnation of God in an empirical human being. This act of expiation is performed by the Paraclete; for just as man must suffer from God, so God must suffer from man. Otherwise there can be no reconciliation between the two." —C.G.Jung, "Answer to Job," 1952.
Like Daniel to the King of Babylon, or Job to Yahweh, Stockhausen's piece points towards that reconciliation, surrounding us in the sound of discord, out of which emerges the fairest harmony.

Autobiographical / Essay piece: due next week & notes
Hi all,
The final for your first assignment is due next week (autobiographical / essay). Please make sure you bring these in—complete narrative, in sequence, with sound / in-formed by your 3 words—. 'Quicktimes' are preferred as they are easier to view. Make sure you include a slate at the beginning or end of your piece with the project name and your name (a slate is usually a black or white screen with text on it). We will allow 10 minutes to upload all work on my station for review.
Some of you have not presented work as of yet, needless to say this sets you behind in our process and ultimately plays against you, so make sure this is resolved with resonant / cohesive work next week. If you need feedback use this blog, that's what it's for, however it should not replace or stand in for work that is due each week.
There were improvements to your pieces today; all have potential but some still feel like fragmented studies. Now is the time to actualize that potential. I am looking for eloquent, evocative and unified narratives that immerse us into their language, mind, space and emotional landscape. Claire's project is a great example of the caliber of work I am looking for (setting examples is not ideal but I feel it can help here). Her piece speaks for itself, carrying time & thought within it. It is a reference as to how verbal & cinematic language converge in an autobiographical essay that presents us with a 'state of being,' a glimpse into someone else's reality through an articulated point of view that requires no further description. You are all capable of this, push it.
Keep in mind the readings we have discussed and the work samples we have reviewed: ask yourself, does this work make me momentarily 'forget' time? does it carry me within it? Is this something I am happy putting my name next to?
In relation to spoken or voice over segments (essay) and their image counterparts please take a look at this film:
"2 or 3 things I know about her"—Jean-Luc Godard.
This film is quite fantastic in how it is narrated by a silent and almost suspicious voice, its use of landscape as an extension or contraction of human emotional space, and its discussion on language, being and sensuality. It also poses the question: who is speaking to whom? who constructs this story? what role does the camera play in unveiling or concealing people and events? etc
I am available for feedback, reviews and any questions you might have
As my good friend Jenna Didier says "Let's make something beautiful"
Thank you,
carolina
nb: I will post more work samples here in the upcoming days. You will receive a reading assignment next week.
nb2: Claire: would it be possible for you to post your piece here? if not in totality then excerpts, for people who were not able to make it today...thank you

hodological space
In the topological psychology of the Polish/German-born US psychologist Kurt Lewin (1890–1947), a special form of topological geometry in which paths and vectors are defined psychologically, the distance between one hodological region and another being not the shortest path but the path of least effort given the attractive and repulsive valences of the regions making up the space. See also principle of least effort.[From Greek hodos a way + logos word, discourse, or reason + Latin -al from -alis of or relating to][...]
The term 'hodological space' is derived from the Greek word 'hodos', path, way. In contrast to the mathematical concept of space as presented on maps, plans, etc. 'hodological space' is based on the factual topological, physical, social, and psychological conditions a person is faced with on the way from point A to point B, whether in an open landscape or within urban or architectural conditions.

Atom Egoyan
I would love to see Speaking Parts again, it is a great film about technology, film , recording , alienation , questioning the real amongst other things. I am going to see if I can get it from netflix, it would be great to discuss either here or in the class. It could also be great to watch his short films , wish I haven't seen

next week
Hi all,
Brief re-cap on what's due next week:
-- rough cut for project 1: this entails a full sequence for your essay / autobiographical project.
things to consider are: camera angles, lighting, sound; as integral components to cinematic language. keep in mind the readings we have been discussing as trigger points for thought and execution. for instance: how does the 'black screen' enunciate the absence of body and the presence of sound, possibly emanating from a body or environment? how do camera angles relate to how characters / situations are portrayed? (intimate as in a close, encompassing as in a long shot etc...how do these 'follow' each other sequentially to unveil the story or emotional landscape, mood of the film) abstraction & representation, depiction & evocation etc
use the words you selected as materials that can inform your work; these can serve as structural paradigms or 'mood' paradigms: for instance, libido can allude to intensity shifts in your piece (through colour, sound, pacing, rhythm etc), error can present itself as a discontinuity in sequence, or a form of rupture that presents an alternate possibility for the viewer; excess can be perceived as a structural element: for instance, the film gradually becomes more populated in form or action or presents an increment in sound etc
we will review your pieces next week & will go over some technical aspects of recording image,
these are: exposure, white balance, colour temperature and aperture
(below are some wiki posts that can get you started)
any questions welcome / will be out this weekend returning monday
kindly,
c
